Cloud Computing: Present and Future – 2023 Review
Cloud computing is a solution widely used by global organizations and various industries, and its growth rate is increasing every year. What is the current trend and what are the future predictions for this sector?

Cloud computing is a technology designed to process and store data. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that the data is not stored on computer drives, but in a virtual environment, on servers outside the local network, or in the so-called cloud.

Why the continued popularity of cloud solutions?

This technology makes running a business easier and ensures secure data storage, efficient information transfer, easy customer service as well as additional cost savings for the business. And, in particular, it is a key solution for e-commerce businesses.

Cloud computing facilitates many processes in everyday business operations, but varies on a case-by-case basis depending on the nature of the application. This technology often allows us to acquire business quickly and at scale. At the same time, programmers need to know how each of the cloud providers works, so that their code, and sometimes entire systems, can be properly adjusted to a particular solution.

More importantly, data processing in the cloud has a clear impact on the work of a company, website, or even individual employees. The cloud means that e-commerce websites don't have to plan to buy servers before peak user activity, such as the holidays, to accommodate sudden changes in traffic. Scale server capacity automatically or manually a few days before an expected increase in web traffic.

It should also be noted that startups can start using these services quickly and cheaply. Their programmers don't have to deal with differences between devices and operating systems or their different versions.

Year-on-year growth

The cloud computing market is growing year by year. Due to the complexity of DevOps, owning and launching your own hardware is becoming increasingly expensive. Currently, experienced teams of web engineers are needed to maintain equipment, configure it on the best cluster tools, maintain clusters, set up failover, and ensure easy access. Therefore, the service costs are higher than the cost of the equipment, especially if you plan to set up in multiple locations.

And this is exactly what the market demands, implementing the launch of our services in many regions to stay close to customers. It's no wonder that it's becoming more and more economical and cost-effective to choose offerings from cloud computing providers, who provide full service and maintenance.

Moreover, these services involve paying only for the functions you actually use. There is no need to maintain and pay for dozens or hundreds of operating servers to avoid future problems due to potential increases in web traffic. The cloud allows businesses to scale on demand. This means lower costs because fewer resources are required. The initial cost is also lower, because, without the cloud, you first have to buy server hardware, which costs hundreds of dollars, even if it becomes obsolete in 4 or 5 years.

Thanks to favorable economic conditions, cloud computing is becoming cheaper every year. More and more people are using it, competition between providers is fierce, and increasingly sophisticated software makes it easy to launch your own cloud.

Today's Trends

Last year, the cloud computing industry exhibited several strong trends.

The Kubernetes platform dominates its competitors in the cloud computing industry, although smaller vendors (such as Appfleet) offer similar k8s solutions. It is a container management and scaling platform. With k8s, you can build a solution that will control your application instance count and include a load balancer, all container-based. Additionally, k8s is supported by most public clouds.

This shows the importance of containers but also shows how difficult it is to maintain such an infrastructure. Containers are a new way to deploy online services. Create a zip file image that contains everything you need to launch the software. Regardless of its location, its content will always remain the same.

The same is the case with containers. They are lightweight virtual operating systems that contain all programming code, all configurations, and additional services. This makes them mobile and easy to scale. You don't even need to know where the container is running. Today, programmers can write their code in any language and if it works in our system, it will work anywhere. It automates work and allows businesses to grow faster.

Equally important to the industry are new Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) technologies and the launch of LTE Cat M1. The first solution is an LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) technology standard, developed to run a wide range of mobile services, particularly related to device-to-device communications. The latter is a data transfer network for mobile service providers that provides faster transfer (up to 1 Mb/s) and supports Voice over LTE (VoLTE) applications. It may also have mobile and portable applications (eg telematics, fleet management).

The launch of these technologies and the deployment of 5G will make it possible to control technological processes from the "cloud". The growth of the interface and unification market is also becoming relevant. This will allow fast switching from one cloud to another even in case of provider failure.

After this?

The year 2023 will be associated with 5G networks, which will play an even bigger role in the Internet of Things. Smarter devices in our homes and urban environments will make our lives easier.

It also means that cloud service providers will need to open more so-called edge locations, stay closer to customers, reduce latency, and increase the efficiency and power of new solutions. Edge locations are small data centers located close to customers. Instead of using a large, partially overloaded data center, you can set up 20 smaller servers, reducing costs and increasing capacity as users start connecting to nearby servers.

It seems that the future of cloud computing is bright. Currently, technology is developing very quickly and is more affordable than ever before. More and more industries are turning to cloud computing because it is much easier to operate than their own data centers. Server maintenance simply becomes obsolete. It has been replaced by code maintenance, which works in conjunction with a server load monitoring system. This is the demand of our time and it is a fact that we cannot argue with.
